This original Altec M11 Microphone System pairs a rare gold M150 tube microphone body with a 21D omnidirectional capsule and a fully serviced P518A “lunchbox” power supply. The power supply houses the highly desirable TB-103 output transformer. The set includes the original Altec microphone case and original microphone cable, with a rare swivel-mount connector.
The M150 is fitted with a hand selected NOS 6AU6 tube that was tested for quiet operation.
The 21D is our favorite capsule for the M11. Unlike the 21B, which has slits along the side for side-address use (which most people don’t realize), the 21D has openings at the front, so you can point the end of the mic directly at what you’re recording. It also has what we consider the best frequency response of the 21 series capsules.
More than 70 years on, this is still one of the best sounding small diaphragm tube condensers we’ve ever used. It captures exceptional detail and realism on drum overheads, guitar amps, and vocals. The M150 uses a cathode follower circuit and, like the Sony C37A and LOMO 19A9, has a lower output than most condensers, which makes it well-suited for use on loud sources such as guitar amps and drums.
